No one can be sure when the first tea was drunk. However it is known that it came from China and has been used for more than 3,000 years!
According to legend, tea was discovered by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. The Emperor would always drink boiled water for health reason (he was very forward thinking for his time) One day about 2700 years BC, some leaves from a tree blew into his cup. The Emperor drank the water to find that it had developed a rich and bitter aroma. On feeling better, he became convinced that the leaves had therapeutic effects.
Another legend states that a Buddhist priest, who spent 9 years in a sleepless meditation, actually fell asleep while in contemplation. When he awoke, he cut off his eyelids in order to punish himself and threw them to the ground. As the eyelids touched the ground, a holy tea plant sprang up and the priest found that its leaves would make a drink that diminished the desire for sleep.
